Evolution since 1906
From the first of its class to the best in its class
It all started with a 32-year old master saddler who dared to go into business for himself. In 1906 Wilhelm Reutter establishes "Stuttgarter Carosserie- u. Radfabrik" (Stuttgart Body and Wheel Factory). Once his brother Albert joins the business, the company is renamed "Stuttgarter Karosseriewerk Reutter & Co." (Stuttgart Body Factory Reutter & Co.). It quickly becomes an important force in the young automotive industry.
Reutter enjoys success with the "Reform-Karosserie", a predecessor of today's convertible, which is patented in 1909. The company successively delivers individual and serial bodies for nearly all renowned car makers at that time, always with the complete interior fittings including the seats.
In 1931 its contact with the Porsche engineering office sets things in motion for the company's further evolution: following joint developments for predecessor models, Reutter builds pre-production prototypes for the "Volkswagen" (beetle).
1950 sees another successful product: the first Porsche 356 from German production. By the end of 1963 the body factory has produced the majority of the total 78,000 Porsche 356 models at its headquarters in Augustenstrasse as well as at its second factory in Zuffenhausen. Reutter is also involved in designing the Porsche 911.
The first convertible, the first Volkswagen, the first Porsche and tens of thousands of satisfied customers: impressive references after less than 60 years in business.
In 1963 Porsche acquires the body factory, but the success story continues since the seating expertise remains in the company. REutter CAROsserie becomes RECARO, the seating specialist.
Its innovative strength is relentless. Just two years later RECARO revolutionizes automotive seating with the "sports seat", which features lateral supports and foam cushioning.
RECARO has made the highest degree of quality, safety and ergonomically correct solutions our everyday business. Since the early 1970s we have also applied this philosophy to our aircraft seats. Today, also in this business area, we have become a world leader: from a master saddler to a global player.
In 1998 RECARO begins the innovation of seats for tomorrow’s generation with child safety products and two years later RECARO launches its first relax furniture collection.
Based on our accumulated expertise and our long corporate history as a medium-sized family business, we continue to develop new, intelligent and fascinating solutions for better seating.
